Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), is a mental disorder in which an individual has at least two distinct and separate identities, or personalities. These personalities can differ in gender, age, mannerisms, speech patterns, and behaviors. People with MPD often experience blackouts or gaps in their memory when they switch between personalities. The condition is thought to be caused by severe childhood trauma, particularly abuse.
